Let’s hear from beloved local improvisor Neco Pacheaco!
1) What’s your upcoming improv project?
My next project is Secret Monologues from the Unnamed Jill Bernard Project ensemble! This show uses never-before-read monologues and explores the characters and universes they feature.
2) What kind of improv do you like to do?
My favorite improv has fun, fully developed characters: the ones who you see and say “oh I know this person” and remember them for a while after the show.
I also adore big, bold, and playful physicality. This can mean distinct styles of movement for characters, but it can also be how they interact with the stage, the other characters, and the imaginary worlds around them. Let me climb on and/or through something!
3) What advice do you have for anyone curious about improv?
Good improv is just good communication. In its simplest form it’s hearing what someone else has given you, respecting the value and authenticity of it, and offering a response that shares how you feel/think about it. Wash, rinse, repeat.
I think the delight we experience from watching improv is largely that we’re witnessing people working together, supporting one another, and centering joy. And the best part is: these are skills we’re all capable of honing! Everyone can improvise - and most of us already do everyday, just not necessarily on a stage.
